Bar Mitzvah

Growing up in Louisiana, we had a sweet neighbor family across the street who were Jewish.  Their son was my age and when he turned 13, they invited us to his Bar Mitzvah.  I'll never forget it.  What a wonderful, cultural experience for me.  I even had caviar for the first time.  :)

Ruth has a Messianic Jew in her class and he invited his entire 7th grade class to his Bar Mitzvah and it was a BIG celebration.  Because I was out of town and wanted Ruth to attend, I asked Stella's mom if they could go together.

The first event was a Saturday morning brunch and party where they were to wear a baseball jersey with a skirt (he's a baseball fan!).  The evening ceremony was more formal with a big dance afterwards.  Ruth had a super time and I heard she was the life of the party.

Welcome Home

It was a LONG trip home.
We were all exhausted and ready to be home.
MQ started to have a break down on the last hour so I did what any smart mom would do....I introduced her to her first Dum Dum lollipop!
Sweet Lydia made this sign for me and MQ and one for AB as well.  The purple post-it at the bottom says "Lydia did this."  What a sweetie!

Island Love

At the tournament, Mary Quinn's friend, Josie was there with her family.  Josie was also adopted from a Marshall Island family.  She loves MQ and smothers her with hugs and kisses but this weekend for the first time, MQ initiated the love and it was the sweetest thing to see the 2 of them playing and being buddies.

Open Hands

My first summer as a married woman, instead of taking a vacation, My Man and I went on a construction mission trip together to Iasi, Romania.  I remember one of the first nights there, the local missionary, Jeri, passed out ceramic hands that were palm up and opened.  He shared with us the passage of little boy Samuel hearing God in the night and thinking Eli was calling him.  Finally Eli told him it was the Lord and Samuel responded to the Lord, "Speak Lord for your servant is listening."  He went on to say that our life should be lived with Open Hands always.  Open to hearing from God.  Open to doing His will.  Open to obedience. Open to doing what seems to be the impossible.  That message has stuck with me my entire marriage.  Not too many years later, God called us to serve as overseas missionaries for 2 years.  The Open Hand message came to mind.  Over the years many situations have presented themselves where God has tenderly reminded me that my hands must be kept open to His will.  His ways are always better than mine.

This past July we were told that MQ's biological parents were expecting another baby and wanted us to consider adopting her biological sibling.  We've been telling people the last year that 9 is a good number for us.  Our family is complete.  We have no plans to add any more children, especially at our age.  We did not pursue this adoption.  This adoption pursued us and we knew this was something we needed to seriously consider in prayer.

As we prayed and talked and shared with our teenagers the decision before us, I was yet again reminded of the Open Hands that the Lord asks us to keep.  When I considered all of the reasons for passing up this opportunity to raise another child, they were all centered around myself....my time...my energy level....my age.....my reputation.  I know My Man carried his own mental battle of the huge financial responsibility to raise 10 children, not to mention the thought of attending this child's high school graduation using a walker and sporting bifocals on a glasses chain.

But you know, my life is not about me.  It's not about being comfortable.  God never called us to a life of comfort but to a life of complete surrender....with Open Hands.  If the Lord has equipped me to raise 9 children so far, then He will equip me to raise another.  If the Lord has financially provided for My Man to have funds to raise 9 children, then the Lord, who owns the cattle on a thousand hills, will continue to provide.  We KNOW this to be true.

Sometimes I just want to be normal.  I don't always want to be known as the mom with a million kids.  The mom with the freakishly large family who bakes bread, raises chickens and cans her vegetables.  Sometimes I fear that our unusual family scares people off from getting to know me and realizing I'm more like them than they know.  But the reality is, we are not normal and it's o.k. because God calls each of us to follow Him in different directions.  Not everyone feels led to raise a multitude of children or homeschool or live overseas sharing Jesus or committing their lives to feeding the poor....the list goes on.

We talked with our teen Fish Sticks.  We wanted to make sure that they were supportive, that they were not resentful of adding another child, that they did not feel slighted by being raised in such a large home, that they would joyfully embrace another baby in our home.  We were almost surprised at the overwhelming excitement that our kids showed us.  Caleb said his only regret would be that he would have to leave for college when this baby was only a few months old and what if this baby didn't really get to know him as a brother.  So we said YES!  We said YES to raising another child to know and love and serve Jesus.  MQ has brought so much joy to our family - we can't put into words how much we all adore her.  We have room for another.

So Fish Stick number 10 is due Jan. 20.  Eighteen months apart.  I've had 2 babies at once several times before, but I wasn't in my 40's back then like I am now. I have so many eager helpers around here that I know we will have to take turns just to get to help.

Would you as our friends and family join us in prayer as we prepare for this little one. Pray that God will provide, protect, bless and prepare.  Time and again we are blessed by a community of believers who surround us and support us.  Thank you so much!  It makes all the difference!

Smoky Mountain Tournament

This year our HS girls soccer team had the opportunity to compete in the Smoky Mountain Cup like the boys have the last 2 years.  I volunteered to be soccer mom for the girls this fall and helped out with the planning of the tournament stay in Gatlinburg.  I prepared the food in advance and booked the cabin.
Thursday night we played Rockwood High School.  It was a rough game but we tied the game 1-1.  They were a rough team.  Very aggressive.  Using lots of fowl language.  Even some racial slurs to one of our Asian adopted players.  Very disrespectful to the referees.  Our girls played solid and with integrity in the face of all that yuck.  We were so proud of them.

The following day, the older of our 2 refs from the night before approached our assistant coach.  He explained that the way our girls played compared to the way our opponents played stood out so much that he had a chance to witness to the younger ref from that game - using our game as an example of how different Christians behave especially in the face of adversity.  That young ref gave his life to Christ that night.  What a testimony for our team.  So proud of these girls and their character on and off the field.  That soul won for the Lord far outweighed any win on the field.
On Friday, it was hot.  The girls played a solid game but lost 1-2.  We were down 2 players from injury and just weren't able to pull off a win.

On Saturday, our last game was another hot one.  We won 2-1.  The competition is so high at these tournaments.  It's such a great thing watching our players step up the challenge and play so hard.

We had half of our parents attend the tournament which made it so much fun to have a loud voice in the stands.

These 2 ladies are so beautiful inside and out.
They served with me the entire weekend - being "mom" to 19 teenage girls and feeding all of them.
I'm so blessed to be surrounded with ladies like these.
And my sweet AB - what a blessing she is.  She's a leader on her team and serves as Captain. She gives 100% in all her games and it shows.  She's a servant to our family and loves us well.  I'm so thankful to be her mom and get to spend this special weekend supporting her.

Beauty School

I loved getting this photo from Lydia's school teacher showing her hair.  I know Aunt Sara will appreciate this post.  She's not the only recipient of Lydia's braids.

First Happy Meal

Uncle Ross still likes to tell us he has bragging rights that he gave Caleb his first ever Happy Meal in Singapore when he was one.

It's not that I have problems with an occasional Happy Meal, but we don't eat out a ton and when we do, it's rarely McDonald's.

So last week I was out with the Island Princess and decided to swing into the McD drive through for a Happy Meal.  They now have these tiny French fries and they added a yogurt to the kids meals.  She was happy as a lark in her car seat feeding herself those yummy fries from her little fry holder.
And the juice...well that was her first time to have juice as well.  I tried to take it from her to shift the straw so she could get the last sip but she had a death grip on that box and acted aggressively at the thought of letting go of the box.  I think she liked it.

Poultry Love

MQ is turning into a little country girl.
She loves the chickens and always grunts and reaches so we will take her over to see them.
If she's by their feeder and they are hungry, they don't mind her petting them too.

Surprise Celebration

Josiah's buddy, Colton, was turning 10.
His folks surprised him by showing up with his good friends at Dave & Busters.
Josiah had a super time.
So thankful for sweet friends and surprise celebrations.

Awareness Month

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

This month I am very aware of the effects of ovarian cancer because it's the first year that my dear friend, Michelle Whitson, is with Jesus after her 3 year battle.

We were in Congo picking up Jeshua and Jedidiah when she found out she had cancer.
She continued to teach kindergarten at our school as she battled. Last year - her last year to teach -  she taught Jeshua and Jedidiah.  What a blessing she was to our family.

I miss her.
I think of her every time I walk past her kindergarten room and don't see her monkey decorations and see her smiling face.  I think of her when I tuck MQ in her bed and press the tummy of her monkey animal to make it play lullabies because Michelle gave that to MQ and told her she couldn't wait to have her as a little monkey in kindergarten. And I think of her when I see her teal ribbon and initials on our football teams' helmets as they honor her and her 2 sons who played football so well for GCA.

I look forward to seeing her again one day.
It's the hope we have in Jesus that gives me peace.

Special Guest

We had an away game at Cornersville, TN.  It was an hour drive south for us.
The Warren crew (minus their 2 college kiddos) drove an hour an a half to meet us there and my Mom's cousin, Scott, drove up from GA to watch Caleb play.

What normally would have been an almost 5 hour drive, turned into an 8 hour drive due to people from Florida fleeing Hurricane Irma.

What a treat to have special guests come watch Caleb play.

Duh!

Walking out of Academy Sports and I overheard a little boy ask his mommy what "that" was in the front outside of the store.
"Oh son, that's a stand where the referee in a tennis match sits."

It took all within me to keep my mouth shut.
Hope that little boy doesn't repeat that on the playground.

Clearly not from TN!

Shh! Don't Tell Him

There are 15 seniors on our football team this year.  They make up half of our team.
The senior moms joined together and had custom t-shirts made.
Senior GCA Football Mom on the front and FISH #22 on the back.

I'm so excited!  I can't wait to wear my shirt this Friday night.
Caleb doesn't know so SHHH!  Don't tell him.
